The Endosafe LAL-test serves as a method to determine LPS in our purified protein samples. LAL stands for Limulus Amebocyte Lysate, this is an extract of the blood cells of the Atlantic horseshoe crab. Those blood cells produce enzymes that bind and inactivate lipopolysaccharides (LPS) causing agglutination. LPS should be removed from protein samples when injecting in, for example, mice since this LPS could trigger an immune response. The Protein Core performs this service and tries to remove the LPS in case this would be present.
